We are looking for an early-career Research Officer, Concrete Materials Engineering (RO, CME) to support our Construction Research Centre. The RO, CME would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The primary responsibility of the RO is to support the goals of NRC and the Construction Research Centre through research of international calibre and the development and application of advanced technologies related to concrete materials. The RA will work in a team environment with other researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. While the primary role of this position is to provide support for on-going and developing projects, activities may also include the development of proposals for new research initiatives, project management, and providing services to NRC clients.

This position will provide direct support to major research initiatives on concrete durability, low carbon content concrete for climate change mitigation, and climate resilience of concrete infrastructure. Concrete durability work will focus on the effects of the mineral pyrrhotite on Canadian concrete in a collaborative project between NRC and at a number of Canadian universities. The RO is expected to be involved in developing and refining tests for the presence of reactive pyrrhotite in concrete, investigating mechanisms for pyrrhotite caused damage, identifying mitigation measures, and organizing national round robin tests.

The RO will also participate in on-going work related to the development and deployment of low carbon concrete and on improving the climate resiliency of concrete infrastructure. These activities are supporting Government of Canada priorities for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adaption to the effects of climate change on the built environment. Work in these areas may involve providing support to Federal Government departments as well as laboratory research.

Documenting results in the form of reports, research papers and conference presentations is a key part of the RO’s responsibilities. While the position is based in Ottawa, Ontario the RO may be involved in field work elsewhere in the country.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

A PhD in Civil engineering (Concrete and Cementitious Materials). A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a related field combined with significant experience in concrete materials engineering may also be considered.

Preference may be given to candidates with a multidisciplinary background in concrete structures and systems, materials, and/or chemistry.

Education related to concrete durability would be considered an asset.

Experience

  • Significant experience in the analysis of concrete performance, including durability issues.
  • Significant experience in the design and analysis of laboratory tests related to concrete materials engineering; including data collection and analysis, overseeing data production, and ensuring data quality.
  • Experience in the documentation of research results, including writing research papers or reports and in oral presentations.
  • Experience with concrete durability tests.

The following could be considered assets:

  • Experience with concrete mix design.
  • Experience in project development and management and in client interactions.
  • Experience with the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to construction materials.
  • Experience with the mitigation of problems created by aggregate reactions such as alkali-silica reaction in concrete.

  • Extensive knowledge of factors affecting the performance and durability of concrete.
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles for concrete materials.
  • Knowledge of cement chemistry.
  • Knowledge of methods of instrumentation for collecting laboratory and field data related to concrete materials.
  • Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International cement and concrete standards.
  • Knowledge of pyrrhotite behaviour in concrete would be considered an asset.

Compensation

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the AsRO – AcRO level, which is an early to mid-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $123,393 annually.

Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
