Position
The Research Technician role is responsible for ensuring the efficient daily functioning of the Research & Development (R&D) laboratory while providing strong scientific support to the formulation scientists. We are seeking a candidate with an interest in managing daily operations in an R&D lab to join our dynamic and multidisciplinary New Product Development team. This role is intended for a scientist with a background in the life sciences who possesses solid bench skills and has a passion for organizing and coordinating combined with excellent computer literacy. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated team-player looking for a role in which they can learn and grow. This is an exciting opportunity to be directly involved in creating new, innovative products containing cannabis, for sale in the adult-use and/or medical channels in Canada.
This is a new role for a full-time position located in Langley, BC.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ONE (50%)
Technical support
- Organize, support, and collaborate with team members to meet project deliverables and timelines
- Assist formulation scientists with development of new formulations/processes for a variety of different dosage forms (solids, liquids, semi-solid dosage forms)
- Conduct all activities in accordance with scientific standards, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations and established policies and practices
- Prepare and present data at team meetings
- Participate in troubleshooting and process improvement
- Be responsible for equipment qualification, calibration, and maintenance
- Execute specific protocols for Quality Assurance (QA), e.g., evaluation of packaging solutions
TWO (25%)
Administrative
- General lab housekeeping utilizing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Keep the lab neat, tidy and in efficient operational order
- Create and maintain standard lab documentation such as Protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Reports, etc. using MS Word, MS Excel
- Coordinate shipments, receipt of materials and samples, and arrange delivery of samples to outside labs/locations
- Be the primary person responsible for cannabis inventory management using an electronic Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
- Be the primary person responsible for implementation and compliance with OHS guidelines for the location
THREE (25%)
Purchasing/Procurement
- Manage stock of consumables and lab supplies, including issuing Purchase Orders (POs), ordering, maintaining inventories, monitoring shelf-life, sending invoices to Accounts Payable for payment processing
- Search for vendors for ingredients/excipients, identify and evaluate suppliers, set-up new accounts
- Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships
- Coordinate receipt and tracking of all new vendor materials
- Assist with procurement of equipment
KNOWLEDGE / SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Required
o Understanding of material and equipment hazards and ability to perform duties in a safe manner, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment
o Hands on experience using, calibrating, and maintaining commonly used lab equipment
o Ability to perform basic testing and analysis with minimal supervision
o Strong troubleshooting/investigative skills
o Ability to write scientific protocols/reports and SOPs
o Proven proficiency with Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams
Highly Desirable
o Experience with project management tools and/or Gantt charts
o Experience with managing a laboratory information management system (LIMS), or similar software
Beneficial
o Knowledge of general R&D formulation development activities (e.g., pre-formulation studies such as excipient compatibility and stability evaluation)
o Experience working with lipid soluble drug products
o Experience flavouring products
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS
This role requires safe operation of R&D-scale and pilot-scale machinery. The employee may be standing for up to 80% of their workday. The employee may have to lift supplies and equipment that way up to 20 kg. The employee may have to wear appropriate protective equipment, such as a mask, gloves, hearing-protection, booties, hairnet etc.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
· Minimum of two (2) years of academic or industry experience in a laboratory environment
· Coordinator or managerial role in a lab setting a strong asset
· Experience in the pharmaceutical or nutraceutical and/or the cannabis industry a strong asset
Education:
· MSc in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or other relevant fields strongly preferred
· BSc with a minimum of three (3) years working in a research technician role will also be considered
COMPETENCIES
- Must have above-average organizational skills and ability to coordinate/manage a very active R&D lab with multiple projects on the go
- Ability to work independently and have the initiative and drive to achieve defined objectives and deadlines under tight project timelines
- Strong documentation skills, including technical proficiency with commonly used software
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with most personalities and styles of communication
