Position Summary

Respiratory Therapists provide respiratory therapy service 24/7 to patients in the Intensive Care Units, Emergency Department, Operating Rooms, Post Anesthetic Care Rooms, Wards, Rehabilitation, Complex Continuing Care and Outpatient Clinics.

Duties

  • Assisting with airway management
  • Responding to all cardiac and respiratory arrest, trauma
  • Attending intra and inter-hospital transports of critically ill patients
  • Administer specialty aerosolized and MDI medications
  • Acting as a resource for the nurses, residents and allied health personnel in Respiratory/Airway related care
  • Participating in teaching patients the use of Respiratory Therapy equipment for both hospital and home care use
  • Performing diagnostic tests such as bedside spirometry, oxygen saturations, blood gas analysis, administering oxygen and other medical gas therapy
  • Assist with bronchoscopies managing all ventilated patients according to departmental ventilation protocols
  • Being an integral member of the healthcare team delivering respiratory care where required throughout Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto Rehab Institute.

Qualifications

  • Completion from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists preferred
  • Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  • At minimum, 1 year practical and related experience
  • Ability to perform without direct supervision
  • Effective communication skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
  • Excellent decision-making, problem solving and time management skills
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or department policies
