Seed Orchard Technician
Eagle Rock Division

Armstrong, B.C.

Reporting to the Divisional Nursery Superintendent, the position will be accountable for the production of genetically improved seed to meet the silviculture goals of Tolko Industries and the seed demands of Select Seed Company.

The primary focus of the Seed Orchard Technician is to implement cultural and operational management regimes, and maintain numerous detailed operations records (e.g., cone and pollen surveys, seedlot registration using SPAR, nutrient requirements, IPM plans and pesticide use). They will be expected to compile yearly budgetary needs and maintain accounts pertaining to spending and procured work hours for invoicing.

The incumbent will serve as an active member of the divisions’ safety and environmental management committees. They will be responsible for providing effective direction and training to the Seed Orchard Assistant and orchard workers in accordance with safety and environmental objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Two-year diploma in horticulture, agriculture, biology, or other relevant discipline. An acceptable combination of formal training and relevant experience will be considered
  • Sound knowledge of seed orchard principles and practices; understanding of phenology and reproductive mechanisms of conifer trees and how to manipulate them
  • Understand, maintain, and operate the orchard irrigation system
  • Competent operation of all seed orchard equipment and implements
  • Comprehend and compile complex detailed instructions
  • Provide detailed information as required for research, planning or budgetary purposes and collaborate for future goals
  • Must hold a valid drivers’ license
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate in Seed Orchard category
  • Provide liaison for management, industry and government contracts, public enquires, tours and visitors
  • Manage positive and effective relationships internally and externally
  • Possess comprehensive computer skills
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills
