Summary of Functions
The Senior Coordinator, Nursery Operations oversees the operation of the CVC Warwick Nursery including the production of plant material to support CVC restoration initiatives. This position will assist in the planning and development of the CVC Nursery, direct its operations, supervise staff in the implementation of this program; and provide excellent customer and client service. Occupational health and safety is a key responsibility.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Post-secondary studies in Horticulture, Forestry, Agriculture or applicable work experience; university degree is preferred
- Pesticide Exterminator License required
- Certified Seed Collector considered an asset
- Valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s License required
Experience
- Minimum of 4-5 years of work experience related to major tasks with direct field experience and hands on operations
- Proven supervisory experience related to the major tasks
- Proven work experience with the safe operation of trucks, farm tractors, potting machines, farm implements, irrigation systems, ATVs, trailers and common landscape maintenance equipment
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
- Working knowledge of container production, plant propagation and morphology, greenhouse operation, and irrigation systems
- Identification of tree and shrub pest and disease and knowledge of their control
- Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, organize and implement projects and programs including budget management and summary report writing
- Knowledge of tree and shrub silvics considered and asset
- Excellent plant identification skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Computer word processing/database/spreadsheet literacy
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
Nursery Production
- Responsible for the production of all CVC nursery stock; potting and propagation of cuttings, seedlings, plugs and seed
- Responsible for the daily maintenance of CVC nursery stock to include; organization of production areas, irrigation, weeding, pest control, over wintering of nursery stock and other applicable cultural practices
Administration / Office
- Responsible for administrative record keeping including; completion of daily work ledgers, vehicle and equipment mileage sheets, casual staff timesheets, personnel attendance records, and fuel consumption on a daily basis
- Responsible for maintaining ongoing records and inventories of container stock, developmental stock, seed, equipment, materials and supplies that apply to nursery stock production
- Responsible for distribution of all nursery stock orders to supply CVC planting programs, community partners, and direct sale to landowners;
- Develop and maintain effective communications with internal and external clients;
- Maintaining effective working relationships with other growers and nursery stock suppliers as well as other organizations such as the Forest Gene Conservation Association
- To support other Forestry Services programs and projects as required; this includes management of the TRM Nursery Inventory and Invoicing database
Planning / Development
- To assist with the planning and development of the CVC nursery facility
- Assist with preparing budgets, monitor program expenditures/revenues for Nursery programs related to major task areas
- Maintain and analyze records required to assess program efficiency and design and implement changes to ensure program effectiveness and resource sustainability
- Assist in the development and maintenance of the Seed Guidelines to address assisted migration science within CVC Nursery stock production systems
- Support Forestry staff in adapting species selection to climate change through Nursery stock production
Supervision
- Hire, train, evaluate and supervise contract, permanent and seasonal staff to complete all assigned duties
- Responsible for ongoing health and safety training of staff and ensuring a safe working environment around the nursery facility and in the field
Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Anticipated Start Date: January 25, 2021 (35 hours/week)
Salary starting at: $70,673 – $84,133
