Located in Calgary, Alberta, the Senior Director, Total Rewards is a key leader in the Centers of Excellence (CoE) team within Nutrien’s Human Resources function. The primary responsibility is to oversee the design, development and governance of Nutrien’s total reward programs and initiatives across North America. Globally, the role will influence and guide Nutrien’s total rewards strategy and design. The successful candidate will be a critical contributor to decisions that influence the culture and employee experience at Nutrien.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Human Resources and leads a team of 20 direct and indirect reports.

What you will do:

  • Act as a strategic and tactical global leader in the delivery of Nutrien’s market-based total reward programs for a diverse workforce including corporate, operational and unionized employees, across the globe.
  • Influence senior leadership and make recommendations that support Nutrien’s culture and business strategies.
  • Develop and implement innovative and scalable programs, policies and procedures in the areas of compensation, retirement, benefits and time away such as leaves and vacation.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and guidance to a team of specialists with an emphasis on individual accountability and career development.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders to ensure the CoE is seen as a valued partner and appropriately involved in business decisions.
  • Provide strategic input on the ERP/HRIS landscape as well as make recommendations for more efficient, scalable systems.
  • Maintain a good pulse on competitive market intelligence, exploring best in class programs, services and technology while appropriately balancing cost and efficiencies.
  • Eager and open to Nutrien’s HR operating model resulting in the team’s collaboration, training and counsel across HR while working together to identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure development of materials for the Human Resources & Compensation Committee of the Board as well as relevant external reporting and disclosure requirements.
  • Oversee the development of total reward related budgets, including ongoing governance.
  • Participate in acquisition and divestiture activities in the context of total rewards including due diligence and integration requirements, as needed.
  • Work with Finance, Legal and other internal stakeholders to ensure successful operation and compliance of total reward programs.
  • Partner, where appropriate, with external business consultants and service providers to achieve deliverables.

  • Exhibits extensive awareness and technical knowledge of total rewards, including current and future trends, and related regulations.
  • Strong business acumen and grounding in financial concepts, including problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creativity, and fortitude to navigate in times of ambiguity; able to pull relevant components out of complex situations to connect the dots and make sound decisions.
  • Translates strategy into execution with well-developed skills in organizational capability and change management, as well as written and verbal communications.
  • Inspiring and energetic leader who can encourage their team to high performance levels.
  • Able to partner, influence and consult with Executives, Finance, Legal and HR professionals.
  • Demonstrates success in project management, often overseeing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Able to react quickly to changes, while keeping alignment with long term direction.
  • Motivated by complexity and challenges; energized by evolving, fast-paced environments.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in HR, Commerce, Finance or Legal. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ related experience preferably in a global, public traded companies and/or consulting firms.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience direct people management in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong familiarity with HRIS systems and their landscape; SuccessFactors/SAP familiarity is a plus.
