As a member of our Buildings group, you will provide insight and innovative construction solutions to ensure the successful execution of various commercial projects, such as: education facilities; hospitals and healthcare centres; office buildings; warehouse and distribution centres; retail outlets and complexes; recreational facilities; hotels and casinos; parkades; and mixed- use facilities. You will also further hone your skills operating under various delivery methods including Bid-Build, Design-Build, P3 (Public-Private Partnership), Construction Management and IPD (Integrated Project Delivery).
Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Senior Estimator leads the estimating team on higher complexity project pursuits and may also be solely responsible for estimating of mid-level complexity projects. The incumbent is accountable for determining project scopes, accurate quantifying / costing, managing deadlines, and mentoring the more junior team members, and possesses the ability to interpret all tender documents, work collaboratively, communicate clearly with the Graham team and with trade partners, and effectively delegate and manage team workloads. The incumbent has knowledge of market conditions and historical data to lead developing strategies to secure work and compile conceptual estimates.
As a Senior Estimator at Graham you will:
Execution
- Develop coaching and mentoring skills with the estimating team throughout all aspects of the estimating process.
- Determine the project scope of work.
- Set-up and complete estimates in company standard estimating program
- Prepare preliminary construction schedules based on self-perform productivities and subcontractor input to determine project duration and resulting overhead costs
- Complete estimate quantification and costing of general condition requirements, labour, and equipment, including productivities, material, and subtrade plugs
- Identify and develop constructability requirements for project construction
- Analyze design criteria and recommend best options based on cost, engineering quality, and availability of materials.
- Identify and propose project risk and cost mitigation as well as the potential for project opportunities and cost savings.
- Analyze and propose potential strategies, advantages, or innovations for the project that could provide Graham with a more competitive bid.
- Apply labour and equipment productivities to estimates based on historically accurate values.
- Analyze subcontractor bids for irregularities and ensure the full scope of work is included.
- Participate in or lead the bid close on medium-sized projects.
- Oversee bid closings of mid to large projects led by more junior team members.
- Assemble conceptual and budget costs using past project analytics, benchmarking, and historical data.
- Develop scopes of work for subcontractors to provide budgeting assistance on medium-sized projects.
- Engage in subcontractor post award scope clarification and negotiation.
Planning and Process
- Prepare an estimate schedule of all activities required to complete a fully quantified and costed estimate (or delegated scopes) based on a full review of the Estimate Checklist, including milestone dates and any required support resources.
- Lead a team of support estimators and operational staff, assisting with planning their time, oversee delegation and quality of work, and compiling all input on medium to large complexity projects
- Lead / manage the Kick-Off Meeting, weekly strategy meetings, and any formal meetings pertinent to ensuring the estimate process will meet the milestone dates established.
- Work autonomously to prioritize the work, set deliverables, and select the appropriate work execution methods, as well as fostering autonomy for the rest of the team.
Financial Accountabilities
- Provide accurate assessments of risk and scope for completed estimates.
- Generate, cost, and review risk mitigation plan, ensuring proper bonding and insurance costing and appropriate contingencies.
- Select and invite to tender trade partners that are assessed to be financially viable with adequate manpower and appropriate level of expertise to complete the work.
- Understand potential pressures on fee and participate in discussions to properly assess and calculate fee.

- Build upon and maintain relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders that reflect and support Graham core values.
HSEQ
- Demonstrate HSE and Quality behaviours that reflect corporate expectations of Actively Caring and Road to Zero.
- Identify project specific HSEQ risks and propose mitigation plans for these items in the estimate.
Leadership
- Lead the estimating team while managing, mentoring, and reviewing the work of E3 and E2 estimators as well as other support staff throughout the estimate lifecycle, ensuring an understanding and accuracy of tasks are achieved and objectives or goals are met.
- Collaborate effectively with operations personnel such as Project Managers, Superintendents, and Project Coordinators.

To be successful at Graham, you will have the following qualifications and experience:
- High school graduate and completion of a diploma training program at a college or technical school; Gold Seal Certified, LEED Accredited, and LEAN experience are all assets.
- Ability to understand, utilize, and communicate specialized information in speech and written text.
- 10-12 years of a combination of field and estimating experience; design-build experience and proficiency in a variety of general procurement methods is an asset.
- Proficiency in the use of Graham software suite, MS Excel, scheduling software (Primavera preferred), quantification software (such as OnScreen Takeoff, Bluebeam, Agtek), and BIM modelling is an asset.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills with strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Advanced degree of aptitude in comprehending tender documents, specifications, and drawings, with an understanding of contractual requirements.
- In-depth understanding of all construction scopes of work with the ability to develop scopes of work for Graham initiated tenders.
- Ability to develop less experienced estimators’ skills through teaching, training, and guidance throughout the estimate lifecycle.
- Ability to foster and develop relationships.
