This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit, Nunavut only.

Reporting to the Manager Finance and Administration, the Senior Finance Officer supervises staff and provides accounting services such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue operations, etc. in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), all applicable legislation, policy, procedures and collective agreements, ensures effective accounting controls are in place and implemented correctly, and that financial transactions, payment processes, revenues, general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations and reports are conducted in a timely manner.

The Senior Finance Officer provides senior financial advice and support to clients and staff, assesses, and evolves financial procedures, internal controls, audit verification processes and reporting, to ensure operational effectiveness, quality financial and client services, in accordance with the financial and service goals of the Government of Nunavut. The Senior Finance Officer has a supervisory impact on the quality of accounting operations, budget control and financial services provided to the assigned Department(s), compliance with legislative, policy and financial control frameworks and the accuracy of financial reports. This position impacts correct payments to employees and suppliers, the secure handling and deposit of revenues, accurate financial reports for management decision making and corporate use, effective control, transparency, and legality of multi-million-dollar O&M and capital budgets and all accounts specific to the assigned portfolio, and the reputation of the Department and the Government of Nunavut internally and externally. This position also provides advice on program administration and complex high risk program accounts, develops, and delivers training programs, and provides staff supervision and support.

The ideal candidate will have a recognized diploma in business administration or related field, plus three (3) years of relevant experience in accounting, auditing, or a similar financial area. This experience must include conducting background research and analysis, developing financial reports and summaries and providing advisory services to clients. Supervisory, training, or mentorship experience is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
