Job description: What is the opportunity?
You will join TI’s Innovation and Engineering team as a Senior IT Engineering Advisor with a mission to engineer a world class ecosystem to host all of RBC’s legacy and next generation cloud native application portfolio which includes stateless & stateful crown jewel applications, AI, ML, Big Data and Data Science applications.
At any given time, the Innovation & Engineering team will be working on multiple technologies across the spectrum of Compute, Storage, Network, Security, Devops, Cloud, Containers etc., and in this role you will have the opportunity to work on multiple cutting edge products, understand them and then collaborate with other TI & T&O teams to implement the technologies in production. You will also have the opportunity to work with a variety cutting edge / innovative companies, and evaluate their products for applicability at RBC. You will also get the opportunity to partner innovation labs (internal or external) to prove out new technologies.
The Innovation & Engineering team is responsible for setting technical strategy, Research and Development, Engineering and creating a vision and roadmap for TI. We identify emerging and disruptive technology trends in Opensource, Academia and the industry with the goal to recommend and implement them if it can provide a technological edge to the RBC business.
The ideal candidate will have a sharp business mind, understand and relate to user needs and align them with the products that are being created. Ultimately, you are motivated by the desire to optimize productivity and nurture program success from inception to completion.
- Execution & delivery:
- Responsible for delivering value-add services and consulting to partners and application teams including performance tuning, systems integration and strategic roadmaps. You will work closely with peers and development teams to provide design and integration expertise, platform configurations and security recommendation for a PaaS /containerized environment consistent with Engineering Release Plan and project deliverables
- Run Proof of Concept exercises from start to finish, including interacting with vendors, working with internal groups to gather requirements, installing and testing technology and writing up analysis and findings
- Assess the relative impact of IT industry trends to current and future enterprise infrastructure needs and projects.
- Collaborate with T&O stakeholders, providing advice and assistance to coordinate and operationalize the integrated strategic and operational plans for innovative technologies, methodologies and processes
- Ensure Safety & Soundness with a focus on operational excellence and solution resiliency; drive benchmarking exercises to ensure RBC IT remains within the top tier of best practices; responsible for technical solutions that meet the needs of our business units in a cost-efficient manner.
- Implement best practices and continuous improvement programs aligned with TI priorities; drive continuous financial performance improvement
- Knowledge Leadership:
- Own multiple services, platforms, or product development across all technology domains; be principal advisor and technical coach to owners of multiple domains; key technical thought leader for Engineering ; seek out new approaches, tools, methods and/or technologies to enhance RBC systems and processes
- Assist in the identification and development of the right processes, methodologies and technologies to drive positive innovation within RBC; scan the external environment for trends and potential disrupters, developing a body of knowledge and providing summary reports to the leadership team with recommendations for further review or action
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
10-12 years of technology domain experience in information technology roles.
- At least 5 years of experience engineering or designing enterprise technologies is required.
- Distributed Computing Systems, Operating Systems, Opensource technologies/Languages, databases, storage, middleware, compute acceleration, experience having built Java/web applications is preferred.
5 years of experience is required working with the technology in multiple domains.
- Candidates for this role require experience as a key contributor on the support, integration, and Engineering / design activities of 75% of the Engineering Work Portfolio for their technology/ domain
- Key to this role is experience having implemented some of the newer opensource technologies such as Docker, Container Orchestration, Kuberentes, Openshift/Mesos/Pivotal, 12 factor apps, Site Reliability Engineering, Observability.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
