Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
The successful applicant will be undertaking research initiatives in the laboratory and field, on multiple research projects looking at sustainable soil management. The successful applicant will help the researchers in sampling soil and runoff water in agricultural fields in Manitoba and in boreal catchments of Northwestern Ontario. They will also help in designing and conducing laboratory and field research, laboratory analysis of soil and water samples for various parameters, installing and maintaining laboratory equipment, recording and compiling data and conducting statistical analysis of data.
Duties:
- Perform academic research in the laboratory and in field.
- Help in field sampling of soil and water.
- Prepare reagents and standards needed for analysis of soil and water samples.
- Help with installing new laboratory equipment and maintenance.
- Enter the data, do the required calculations, analyze and interpret the data.
- Help in maintaining a record of supplies being used and help in acquisition of supplies.
- Update safety sheets in the laboratory, and maintain the inventory.
- Help in preparing presentations and journal articles.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a BSc degree in Agriculture/Environmental Science/Chemistry
- Experience in soil sampling in field/ runoff water sampling
- Experience in soil and water analysis for nutrients/ metals/antimicrobials
- Operation of spectrophotometer/AAS/ pH meter/ Ion chromatography, HPLC-MS
- Experience in using statistical software (SAS, R)
- Ability to work in the field under a range of climatic conditions
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from May 3, 2021-August 31, 2021, and the estimated total hours of work will be 250-560.
