Reports to the Instrumentation Supervisor in the Engineering Department.

What you will do:

  • Administer the site SIS program to ensure the safety availability and reliability of the site’s safety instrumented systems
  • Implement and maintain a sound Process Safety Management (PSM) SIS and Mechanical Integrity practice for Instrumentation and Controls at our Redwater Fertilizer Plant
  • Provide support in reviewing SIS system design, verification, validation and, witnessing commissioning activities; ensure that all SIS documentation is maintained in an as-built state
  • Ensure that all related I&C Mechanical Integrity, RAGAGEP’s, PIP’s and industry standards are followed for general instrumentation and control systems and assist in implementing new product technologies where appropriate
  • Review and approve new SIS designs before implementation, and update the SIS Manual
  • Review SIS system design, verification, validation, writing test procedures and witnessing commissioning activities of SIS,
  • Act as owner/ administer of the Safety Instrumented Systems installed at a site, ensuring proper management as per Nutrien’s Process Safety Management (PSM) SIS practice, ISA 61511 & IEC 61508 standards
  • Deliver training to all functions that interface and/or maintain SIS
  • Development of written procedures for inspection, testing and maintenance of the SIS
  • Monitor and ensure that SIS devices are tested and reliable within the SRS defined frequency for SIS devices
  • Monitor and ensure that Safety & Environmentally Critical and MTS devices are tested and reliable
  • Full functional testing of the MTS/SIS interlocks is witnessed
  • Enter and close all SIS audit findings in EtQ and review and close I&C, SIS assigned EtQ tasks
  • Ensure MTS and SIS function tests are performed by their due date
  • Owner/administrator, maintain and monitor site Triconex SIF Manager to ensure SIF’s are meeting design and safety specification/requirements
  • Support and accountable for Redwater Continuous Improvement PSM/SIS initiatives and yearly goals/activities

What you will bring:

  • Engineering degree or Technologist certification
  • Must be registered or eligible to register with APEGA or ASET in the Province of Alberta; Certification in Functional Safety Engineering /Management will be preferred (TUV, CFSE, CFSP and/or FSE certification desirable)
  • 10+ years at a chemical facility or a heavy industrial site

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential

Basic leadership skills, including:

Strong communication skills to express the requirements of ISA 61511 – Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector and gain acceptance from the affected groups

Capable of working with diverse groups (e.g. maintenance personnel, operations personnel, project teams, EPC’s and management) * Good organization and record management skills

  • Significant experience in:
  • SIS system design, verification, validation, and commissioning
  • SIL allocation for SIFs
  • Development of Safety Requirement Specifications
  • Knowledge of Safety Life Cycle Concept for SIS systems
  • Knowledge, experience, & interpretation of various standards and application to projects:
  • ISA 61511 (Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector)
  • IEC 61508 (Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety- Related Systems)
  • CSA B149.3 and NFPA 85/86/87 Code for the Field Approval of Fuel-Related Components on Appliances & Equipment
  • Burner Management Systems (BMS)
  • Turbines and Governor Control System
  • Distributed Control system (DCS)
  • General Purpose and Safety Programmable Logic controller
  • Machine Monitoring Systems
  • Knowledge of the implementation/maintaining of the site I &C Mechanical Integrity Program
