The Opportunity

Grass Valley is looking for a passionate Payroll and Benefits specialist who will manage all operations related to payroll processing for over 400 employees at Grass Valley Canada, oversee the administration of various benefits programs for the company and continuously evaluate said programs to ensure we are providing added value to the total rewards package. The specialist will also provide counsel and the highest quality of support to employees for all their payroll and benefits questions. Reporting to the HR Manager, this role will be based out of Grass Valley’s head office in Montreal.

Your Role

  • Ensures timely and accurate processing of payroll on a bi-weekly (hourly) and bi-monthly (salaried) basis for approximately 400 employees;
  • Maintains adequate records in payroll system and files in order to comply with the applicable payroll and tax reporting requirements;
  • Completes the full year-end cycle including end of year adjustments, tax slip verification and submission, year-end form submission and payments, etc.
  • Stays abreast of applicable payroll laws including labor standards and ensures compliance;
  • Partners with the finance team to ensure compliance with all internal control requirements and participates in financial audits as required;
  • Generates payroll reports and completes reconciliations and verification to ensure that the data of each payroll balances;
  • Takes the lead on communicating important information to employees related to payroll and benefits on a regular basis;
  • Acts as the main point of contact for payroll and benefit inquiries to the employees;
  • Develops and/or revamps payroll related policies and processes based on business needs to ensure efficiency;
  • Responsible for administrating the various employee benefit programs including group insurance plan, pension and retirement savings plans, short term and long term disability plans, parental benefits and health & wellness plans;
  • Actively manages all leave of absence files and provides guidance and support to employees on leave;
  • Works with external counsel to help employees obtain required work permits and visas in order to carry out their job duties at customer locations;
  • Responsible for the benefit onboarding of new employees to educate them about the different programs available and to promote their use;
  • Perform regular assessment of current benefit programs by analyzing usage and costs and benchmarking
  • Support the HR Manager within all areas of Human Resources on projects, activities and development of new programs as assigned;
  • Actively participate on the local H&S committee to provide input and represent the HR function.

What you Have to Offer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Administration, Human Resources or related field
  • At least five (5) years of experience with full-cycle payroll processing;
  • Experience working with payroll systems is required, knowledge of ADP Work Force Now is a strong asset
  • Excellent communication skills in French and English;
  • Strong technical knowledge in payroll and payroll operations to own Canadian payroll with minimal guidance or direction
  • Knowledge of benefits compliance and administration
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, particularly with MS Excel
  • Effective problem solving with a meticulous attention to detail and be well organized
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and prioritize according to business objectives;
  • Demonstrates diplomacy and tact;
