The primary role of the Industrial Hygiene Advisor is to anticipate, recognize, and evaluate health and safety concerns and identify mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate the potential impact on the health and well-being of individuals working within the Nutrien NPK Business Units, Distribution and Retail Operations throughout Canada. The work associated with this role is assigned in terms of objectives and priorities that are determined based on business needs. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Occupation Health & Wellness.
Location: Calgary, Saskatoon, or any NPK Canada site
Key Responsibilities
An initial and ongoing point of contact to provide all relevant information and documentation regarding work-related incidents to Safety, Human Resources, Operations, Risk Management, and Legal to minimize claims and control costs, including
- Corporate Radiation Safety Officer for Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Nuclear Substances Licenses, provides oversight of Canadian Business Unit Nuclear Substances and Radiation Device licenses and ensures compliance with the license conditions and the regulatory requirements as stipulated by the Commission
- Lead the development and implementation of Industrial Hygiene practices and solutions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Provides specialized skills and knowledge in response to and control of Radiological Emergencies and events.
- Serves as a trusted senior advisor for Industrial Hygiene to management and key personnel for all Nutrien Canadian operations.
- Coordinates developing and implementing the Nutrien Industrial Hygiene Strategy that ensures compliance with regulatory requirements across North America (inclusive of Canada).
- Collaborates with and provides guidance on Safety and Occupational Health to mitigate risks associated with workplace conditions to eliminate health impacts.
- Monitors Canadian federal and provincial occupational health and safety laws and regulatory changes related to Industrial Hygiene and communicates changes with all affected operations.
- Participates in selecting, designing, and implementing Industrial Hygiene software and equipment across the organization.
- Actively mentors facility personnel on the basic principles of industrial hygiene to support site industrial hygiene programs.
- Works with Technical Training as a subject matter expert in developing and reviewing applicable Industrial Hygiene education and training materials.
- Help sites find, evaluate, and work with industrial hygiene contractors/consultants to facilitate site industrial hygiene work.
- Help sites interpret and understand industrial hygiene information from consultants and regulators.
- Evaluate site compliance with internal and external requirements regarding safety and health.
- Assist in planning, communication, and facilitation of Health and Wellness events, promotions, and communications
- Approximately 40% of travel may be required.
Qualifications
- 10 years of Industrial Hygiene experience with a professional certification in Industrial Hygiene. Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences is preferred.
- Proven experience facilitating Industrial Hygiene programs in a manufacturing environment in a multi-site, multiprovince, or national company.
Skills
- Understanding of all Canadian federal and provincial occupational health and safety laws related to Industrial Hygiene.
- Ability to communicate and influence others with respect to industrial hygiene practices and programs.
- Proficient with SH&E and Industrial Hygiene reporting and tracking systems; as well as Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to be an effective and contributing member of a team or independently as the need arises.
- Must be self-motivated and disciplined with an ability to concurrently deal with multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to act as a subject matter expert, train and mentor others.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally (including a current and valid passport and driver’s license).
