PURPOSE OF JOB
Utilizing experience from multiple Staples application areas, the Senior Manager role is solely responsible for several areas of application support and development. On occasion the Senior Manager may be called upon to mentor a Manager as part of an orientation or knowledge transition process. The Senior Manager is responsible for managing the associates in their respective areas including programmer/analysts, business analysts, QA analysts, project leads and other roles which are deemed required for the support and maintenance of assigned area of applications.

The Senior Manager is responsible for managing the associates in their respective areas including programmer/analysts, business analysts, QA analysts, project leads and other roles which are deemed required for the support and maintenance of assigned area of applications.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and Develop Associates: 40%
- Developing and mentor associates through proper task delegation and active observation and interaction.
- Evaluates performance of the assigned associates via the performance review process.
- Recruit new head count for the team resulting from expansion and/or to backfill due to attrition (voluntary and involuntary) within applications group
- Address and manage associate performance concerns if required
- Manage 3rd party vendors in the support and development of the applications within the assigned Area. This includes the daily management of consultants and temporary resources who are on contract.
- For the SBA CA ERP (Alpha) Projects –current associates managed: (Programmer, Application, Analysts, offshore contractors, onshore contractors)
- Significant Level of contribution with authority of a frontline or primary nature
- Responsible for managing Divergent Interests – conflicting objectives that inhibit reaching a solution for all parties involved, through prioritizing development work for the team, in a complex environment.
Manage the Area’s Work: 60%
- Manage and complete the business objectives supported and dependent of the applications within the assigned area.
- Manage the assigned associates to ensure the work is completed on schedule, as per the specifications and on budget.
- Delegate and manage the group’s work in a proper and professional manner
- Escalate issues (tactical and strategic) to the Senior Director in a timely manner
- Communicate area specific updates to the ITLT and other members of the Executive Team when required
- Work in a collaborative, effective and professional manner with his/her peers (other Managers from other departments and within IT)
- Ensure the internal processes, procedures, methodologies and technologies utilized within applications are updated, effective and keeping in line with industry best practices
- Work with international teams for projects involving US and Canada.
- Develop process improvements and other initiatives which could lead to cost savings, morale boosting and measurable efficiency improvements within Applications, IS and the Business
- Implement, stabilize, maintain, upgrade, and enhance the suite of applications within their assigned Area
- Work closely with business owners and stakeholders to understand business goals, needs problems and requirements.
Qualifications
Knowledge / Skill Requirements:
- 15 years of project management – including tools and applications which support the discipline
- 15 years of software development life cycle
- 15 years of process and software change management experience
- Solid business communication and analysis
- 15 years of experience managing or directing peer associates in a lead role
- Experience in quality assurance in any of the related disciplines
- Experience in software testing methodology and process for one of the related disciplines
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Business acuity and good understanding of Finance, OMS and WMS concept and principles. .
- Effective process and procedure management
Experience:
- 15+ years in a Technical Lead (internal) function or 15+ years Project Lead/Manager (internal) or 15+ years (external) as a software development manager or 15+ years (external) of experience as a project manager in a software development capacity
- Experience in the commercial / contract (B2B) sector is preferred however equivalent experience in other sectors within a software development context will also be considered
Education:
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science or equivalent working experience in software development.
