Job Summary
The Centre for Student Development and Leadership (SD&L) supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive student engagement framework through programming and leadership on best and promising practices across faculties and programs for students at all levels of study, and across all faculties and programs at UBC Vancouver. This includes programming in support of the first-year experience, programming and initiatives for students in the upper years of their undergraduate degree as well as graduate students to achieve the strategic outcomes articulated in the Student Strategic Plan. The Centre supports personal and professional leadership development for students seeking to enhance the experiences of other UBC students and contribute to respectful, inclusive and accessible communities at UBC.
The Student Development and Leadership Coordinator coordinates low barrier and scalable student development initiatives as well as programming in support of student leadership development. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination, development and delivery of a wide range of programs and initiatives such as orientation, community building and leadership workshops supporting a comprehensive student experience framework. The incumbent works closely with Faculty partners. The incumbent will manage student staff and will work in very close partnership with other staff and faculty, student organizations and student government (AMS/GSS), academic departments, and other Student Affairs departments to coordinate and deliver programming across the following portfolios within the Centre for Student Development and Leadership: the Student Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development, and Student Involvement.
The incumbent will work within a team of Student Experience Advisors and Coordinators who work in partnership with members of the campus community to contribute to dynamic, inclusive, and respectful living and learning environments for students at the University of British Columbia.
Organizational Status
Reporting to a Student Development Advisor, the Coordinator is a member of the Centre for Student Development and Leadership staff team
The Student Experience Advisor will be expected to work in strong collaboration across the Centre for Student Development and Leadership team, to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers, and to work independently to complete assigned duties.
Collaboration with campus partners is essential to ensure students are provided with the necessary support, resources and information pertinent to their UBC student experience. This position works closely, and in cooperation, with colleagues in Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS), Admissions, and Faculties to coordinate joint programs and ensure that programs serve the needs of students across their various points of connection with UBC.
Work Performed
Develop and coordinate co-curricular programming opportunities for students in all levels of study, and across all faculties and programs at UBC Vancouver, including but not limited to:
Creating and delivering scalable and widely accessible first year experience and orientation programming.
Developing, implementing and delivering programming and initiatives that foster student connections with peers, faculty and staff, build their capacity to contribute to respectful and inclusive communities at UBC and beyond, and enhance their academic and personal success while at UBC.
Developing, implementing and delivering programs and initiatives that support the personal and professional development of students seeking to enhance the experiences of other UBC students and contribute to respectful, inclusive and accessible communities at UBC.
Coordinate all administrative and program planning aspects of SD&L’s cyclical, co-curricular programming including, but not limited to:
Developing, implementing and monitoring registration processes for large scale events and programs.
Coordinating logistics and cyclical planning for large scale events and programs.
Recruiting and preparing student leaders to effectively support SD&L initiatives.
Contributing to the creation and revision of logic models, program plans, and other relevant materials required to deliver, implement, evaluate, and assess the efficacy of co-curricular programs.
Establishing and maintaining administrative systems; coordinate communications and regular reporting; provide updates and briefings on progress and development of programs and initiatives; and reports at the close of programs.
Making recommendations for changes to programs and systems/supports as necessary.
Ensuring program budget and financial reporting are up to date and accurate.
Monitoring and mitigating risks associated with co-curricular programming.
Advise and prepare students participating in, or seeking to participate in SD&L initiatives or programs prior, during, and post program engagement including, but not limited to:
Supporting students in one on one, and group settings, to understand the value of engaging in a SD&L experience.
Highlighting for students the opportunities available at the Centre.
Developing and delivering orientations, student preparation workshops and related resources to support students seeking to participate in a SD&L leadership experience.
Facilitating and delivering workshops within the Centre, to student clubs, and for partners across campus.
Suggesting modifications to workshop content to ensure the workshops are relevant and achieve the outcomes intended.
Supporting students to consider how to create and lead their own leadership initiative including support for identifying organizational partners.
Serving as one of the Centre’s staff liaisons for student organizations.
Ensuring the website content associated with SD&L programs remains up to date and highlights the current opportunities available for students, faculty, and community partners seeking to participate and/or partner on a student development initiative

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including: UBC senior administrators, staff, students, alumni, faculty, staff within community organizations, individual community members, and others in external educational institutions and professional associations. UBC’s community engagement activities have a high profile in the community and engage program participants in situations that may be new. Must be attentive to risk management in all situations; must be aware of the need to minimize risk to participants. As the department is handling confidential information, must understand and respect the principles of confidentiality. Errors in judgment or the disclosure of confidential information could have very public consequences, affecting the reputation of the Centre for Student Development and Leadership and/or resulting in embarrassment to the University of British Columbia and its senior administration.
Supervision Received
Reports to a Student Development Advisor. Works under general direction and with considerable autonomy.
Supervision Given
As required, responsible for supervision of program staff and the management of part-time student assistants, and for providing support to program participants; coordinates, reviews, and evaluates work performance of supervised employees. Participates in hiring and/or selection of program staff, student assistants and volunteers as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications
Experience demonstrating the ability to plan and coordinate is preferred.
Experience and skills in setting goals and priorities to meet existing strategic directions.
Experience working with university faculty, staff, and students is an asset.
Experience working with staff from the non-profit sector and/or public schools is an asset.
Experience facilitating groups and leading information, orientation, and training sessions.
Experience in event or program organizing and promotion is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
Ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives.
Ability to maintain connection between a long-range vision and day-to-day functions; ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines efficiently.
