We are looking for a Technical Officer (TO) to support the Human-Building Interaction team in our Construction Research Centre. The TO would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The TO’s main responsibilities are to:

  • Provide specialized technical support services in the design, planning, conduct and analysis of complex human factors experiments and/or tests, and facilities operation;
  • Develop computerized tools for behavioural data collection, including online surveys and behavioural assessments;
  • Responsible for the data collection of behavioural and physical environmental data;
  • Develop tools for data management, data visualization, and statistical analysis;
  • Write protocols and standard operating procedures, contribute to project reports and to publishing results in research journals.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

An Honours Bachelor’s degree from a university of recognized standing in engineering, psychology or computer science, with an emphasis on human factors (e.g., course work in human factors methods, perception/cognition, statistical analysis of behavioral/physiological data, workspace/equipment layout, human-computer interaction) or equivalent combination of work-related experience, training and education.

Experience

  • Significant experience in html programming for interactive web pages (i.e., online questionnaires)
  • Significant experience in preparing apparatus and experimental stimuli for behavioural experiments
  • Significant experience in following established protocols to collect data in human factors investigations
  • Demonstrated experience in using advanced analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Demonstrated use of specialized domain-specific software relevant to the work
  • Demonstrated experience in discussing issues, providing and receiving feedback through formal and informal presentations on specialized subject matter
  • Experience in contributing to scientific documents including protocols, standard operating procedures, project reports, and the publishing of results in research journals and presentations
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment

Assets:

  • Experience with programming surveys using Survey Crafter Professional
  • Experience with statistical analysis using R and SPSS
  • Experience in programming languages (e.g., Python)
  • Experience with data visualization, graphical and drawing software (e.g., MS Excel, SketchUp Pro Desktop, CAD, InDesign)
  • Knowledge of qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo)
  • Knowledge of technical and scientific literature sources and search engines

Technical Competencies

  • Awareness of basic concepts in behavioural research, particularly environmental psychology and human factors
  • Knowledge of ethical principles for research involving human participants (e.g., TCPS 2)
  • Knowledge of programming for web-based tools (e.g., html)
  • Knowledge of techniques for data management and statistical analysis
  • Basic knowledge of common univariate and multivariate statistical analyses, including parametric and non-parametric statistics

Behavioural Competencies

Compensation

From $73,744 to $94,839 per annum.

In addition, the incumbent who meets the language requirements will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
