We are looking for a Technical Officer, Whole Building Performance to support our Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
Working on a diverse range of projects, from indoor air quality through to low energy buildings, you will be responsible for developing and operating data acquisition systems. Our facilities include several full-scale research buildings where you will measure energy, flows and ventilation system performance. Additionally, we conduct field studies all across Canada where data is collected from real buildings (occasional travel required).
The successful candidate will play an important role within a team that will investigate problems and develop solutions for sustainable resilient buildings and communities. The outputs from projects are used directly by clients and often result in changes to national standards and the national building codes.
Responsibilities will include:
- Provision of technical support services in the design, planning, conduct and analysis of complex experiments and tests.
- Provision of technical support in operation of ventilation and energy research facilities.
- Installation and fabrication of test equipment and experimental test rigs.
Screening Criteria

Education
University degree or college diploma in Engineering, Mathematics or other discipline related to the field of ventilation or building energy assessment is preferred.
Other related degree or diplomas may be considered.
An equivalent combination of related work experience, training and education may be considered.

Experience
- Experience supporting activities related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing routine experiments/tests in indoor environment quality such as air quality, relative humidity, temperature, airflow, and air speed, etc.
- Experience with the safe operation, routine maintenance, repair and installation of basic equipment and laboratory apparatus for indoor environment monitoring, for example air flow measurement, blower door equipment, gas analysers.
- Experience in the design, construction and maintenance of custom mechanical components for scientific apparatus.
- Experience supporting activities related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing routine experiments/tests in field work such as air quality monitoring in homes and office buildings.
- Experience using data acquisition systems and connecting sensors.
The following assets will be considered:
- Experience working in a project management focused multi-disciplinary research environment.
- Experience with the safe operation, maintenance, verification, repair and installation of equipment and laboratory apparatus such as electronic data acquisition systems and particle image velocimetry.
- Experience in radon measurement and mitigation.
- Experience working in a project management focused multi-disciplinary research environment.
- Experience with natural gas and electrical metering.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical Competencies
- Basic knowledge of building performance standard practices such as measuring energy flows, HVAC performance, indoor environment quality, pollutant control.
- Basic knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices required to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
- Ability to analyze and discuss technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to various physical parameters such as: air flow/speed, pressure, relative humidity or temperature measurement.
- Ability to use technical and scientific literature sources, search engines and specialized domain-specific software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, LabVIEW, AutoCAD, and HOBOWare, as well as general Microsoft Office software products.
- Knowledge of basic project management principles, tools and processes.
- Knowledge of basic intellectual property protection and management principles.
- Ability to write reports.

Compensation
From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
