The RAH is one of Alberta’s largest and longest-serving hospitals. We are currently seeking a Unit Manager to lead and support the GOR Ophthalmology / Otolaryngology Operating Room Department. As a front-line manager, you will provide daily operational and clinical leadership to ensure quality care within the department by following unit policies, procedures and goals. Excellent organizational skills are required to provide daily coordination of a busy surgical suite of 10 theatres and 14 recovery bays. Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills are important in this position as you will have the opportunity to work closely with a team of front-line staff ensuring consistent standards, goals and objectives are met and communicated to all members of the interdisciplinary team. Description:
In this Unit Manager position, you will be accountable for the effective management of human, financial and physical resources within the Surgical Suite, including the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU). The ability to be flexible and fluid, working in a variety of surgical services as a leader is an asset. The Unit Manager leads quality initiatives and promotes a professional work environment at all times. Monitoring and organizing the workflow and efficient delivery of patient care through staff scheduling, assignment of work duties and performance management are essential elements in this position. As a member of the management team it is expected that the development of strategic plans, process improvement initiatives, development and implementation of operational plans will be required. It is expected that the Unit Manager will serve as a role model and will incorporate evidence based, best practice into daily operations. The ability to effectively manage team culture is essential creating an environment of respect and caring.

Required Qualifications:
Current registration with the Colleges & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Current CPR (BCLS-HCP). Significant experience in an operating room is essential to be successful in this role; as such, a minimum of 3 years’ current operating room experience in a high acuity OR is required. Demonstrated leadership experience is required – for example, as an Assistant Head Nurse, or as a Team Leader – equivalencies may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Strong organizational and leadership skills and should include a demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to build confidence in others. Ability to manage in a highly organized and rapidly moving environment. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Demonstrates advanced problem solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. A strong track record in establishing and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is necessary. Effective teamwork, conflict resolution, change and resource management skills are essential, incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Advanced computer skills including experience in Microsoft Outlook, Office and email.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a Peri-operative nursing course/certificate. Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) Certification in Peri-operative Nursing. Prior nursing experience and familiarity in Ophthalmology and/or Otolaryngology operating rooms, is a strong asset. Consideration will be given to equivalencies in education and experience.
