We have an exciting opportunity for an Utility Transport Aide to join our team.
Reporting Relationship: Director, Projects & Biomedical Engineering
Employee Group: NOWU Service
Location: Across all sites
Hourly Rate: $24.723 – $25.212
Schedule: Days, evenings, nights, statutory Holidays and weekends
Position Summary
The Utility Transport Aide is responsible for operating and maintaining the flusher disinfector cleaners; Arjo Tornado and Typhoon machines; equipment inventory and battery replacement, and performs a variety of activities, which supports nursing care and unit activities. These unit activities focus on the provision of supplies and hardware which include reprocess able items (bedpans, basins and urinals) and transporting of soiled medical devices to Sterile Processing Department (SPD).
Reporting Relationship
Utility Transport Aide will report directly to the Director of Projects & Biomedical Engineering and work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control Coordinators.
Responsibilities
- Understand and comply with Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
- Seek clarification when unsure of a policy, a procedure or an assignment.
- Sign in at the beginning of your shift, as well as, sign out at the end of the shift via computer (Meditech)
- Pick up Ascom phone and sign out.
- Test the disinfectors
- Operate Flusher Disinfector Cleaner: Arjo Tornado and Typhoon
- Track Arjo usage and disinfect Arjo machines on a weekly basis
- Ensure full completeness of inventory of hardware and specified equipment for each assigned area
- RTLS equipment battery checks and replacements
- Stock Clean Equipment room with appropriate stock level of hardware
- Co-ordinate departmental needs with SPD, including but not limited to
- Pick Up delivery times
- Re-ordering of Hardware
- Stocking of pre-approved stock level of hardware
- Pick up soiled instruments
- Disposed of any cracked or damaged hardware
- Work collaboratively and proactively with Environmental services and SPD personnel to ensure timely availability of medical/surgical supplies
- Wipe down disinfector each day
- Report immediately all incomplete assignments, malfunctioning equipment or exceptional events to the dispatch call (50,000) center, IPAC department and Director of Projects & Biomedical Engineering

- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- At the RCC site this role will also be responsible for patient portering and soiled carts transport
General Responsibilities:

- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations including but not limited to: use or wear of equipment or protective devices or clothing for safety purposes, report to their manager any contravention of this Act or regulations or the existence of any hazards of which he or she know
- Have knowledge and understanding of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) in relation to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and attend all required Health and Safety training.
Requirements:
- Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (attend training as required)
- Knowledge and understanding of Reprocessing and Sterile Supply Processing
- Medical Device Reprocessing (MDRD) or Sterile College certification required
- Knowledge of medical supplies and high level disinfection equipment required
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Standards
- Two years of recent related hospital medical/surgical supply experience
- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to cope frequently and for long periods of time with physical demands such as walking, bending, pushing, and heavy lifting (ability to lift 25-30 pounds repeatedly)
- Ability to handle stressful situations in a fast paced environment
- Ability to operate, with training, machinery, i.e. Disinfectors
- Ability to function while wearing personal protective equipment-gowns, gloves, eyewear and masks
- Effective Customer Service skills required.
- Excellent attendance and discipline free record required.
