Job Summary
The LSI is a UBC Research Institute supported by the Provost, the VPRI Innovation Council, and reporting to the UBC faculties of Medicine and Science. It is home to the research programs of approximately 90 Principal Investigators from four faculties and over 15 departments, who conduct research on a wide variety of life science topics. The advertised position reports to the Strategic Research Development Officer and works closely with LSI Principal Investigators, research staff, and trainees as required.
The Web Developer and IT Liaison programs the website for the Life Sciences Institute; coordinates the design and information flow of the Life Sciences Institute web pages; researches web-based solutions to improve information and transactions on the web (e.g., Web 3.0, Ajax, JavaScript); and designs, implements and modifies layouts and templates to provide an intuitive and specific end-use experience.
The Web Developer and IT Liaison works with content specialists on page development.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the Manager of Operations and Administration, with functional reporting to the Director regarding content, design, programming, and other project issues. The Web Developer and IT Liaison works as part of the Life Sciences Institute team, and interacts with content providers across the department.
Work Performed
The Web Developer and IT Liaison has the following duties:
Web programming: programs and tests web-based interactive applications; plans efficient website architecture that involves technical, aesthetic and functional criteria focusing on the user and on specific LSI, public, and University of British Columbia end-user requirements paying particular attention to web content, the business plan, usability, interaction design, information architecture and web design; assists with maintenance and creation of new pages for and related domains, as required.
Web design: designs and implements interfaces for web publications and information, including writing HTML, CSS, or XML as required; writes and implements CSS standards-based designs and templates;¿ modifies web page designs for individual units or applications; writes and edits incoming content for the web, as required; facilitates usability sessions and tests; embeds social media, such as Facebook and Twitter badges, Video templates, and embedded videos; writes html code to adherence to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines; ensures that all websites are responsive and viewable on diverse media, including mobile devices and desktop. Knowledge of CMS systems. Design and implement complex graphics using Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks and other graphics programs and then optimizing their specific use for the web.
Client management: works with content providers, managers, designers, and systems staff across the Life Sciences Institute; designs innovative ways of delivering information and services on the web; works with the LSI writers to implement content, as well as the Manager of Operations and Administration to improve the overall usability and functionality of departmental web pages. Ensures prompt and timely updates and edits to the Departmental websites as new events, news or public performances occur.
Software Licensing: The Web Developer and IT Liaison administers software licenses for a few select pieces of software, for the researchers at the LSI and in the larger UBC community. Duties include being the main point of contact for software inquiries, adding users to the licenses, and working with the Senior Administrative Coordinator on billing clients for the provided licenses.
General: prepares flow charts, reports, and programming documentation; researches software solutions to problems; researches and recommends best practices for usability, accessibility, and navigation; represents Communications on university-wide committees; performs other duties as required. Serves as an IT contact for the Institute who can assist with directing researchers to appropriate resources, and collecting information about researchers needs so that these can be advocated for at the university level. Additionally, responsible for collecting, collating and disseminating information related to IT security at the institute. Monitors and creates posts on institute Social Media Accounts.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Providing online material for faculty, staff and students offers significant cost savings and improvements in efficiency if done well. People using the web expect fast response, simple but intuitive design, readable material, and frequent updates. Up-to-the-minute knowledge and expertise in this area and meticulous attention to detail are critical to the department strategic plan for providing information and services on the web.
People who rely on our web pages for accurate information include faculty, staff, students and patrons at UBC; faculty, staff, and trainees at other institutions. The impact of errors in our online publications would be considerable. Students make academic and personal decisions based on material published online. Errors would cause serious inconvenience to large numbers of people and could have financial consequences for UBC.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Manager of Operations and Administration, with functional reporting to the Director regarding content, design, programming, and other project issues. Work is reviewed in terms of completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
Supervision Given
The Web Developer and IT Liaison is expected to make moderately complex decisions, with guidance provided in exceptional circumstances.
The Web Developer and IT Liaison may hire and supervise programmers and web content developers on a contract basis. He/she works as a member of the team, and works cooperatively on projects with other staff in the Life Sciences Institute.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in website design (HTML, CSS, graphics, and scripting). Knowledge of browser standards, common plug-ins, and related design issues, especially developing accessible pages. Familiarity with Internet protocols and languages, including PHP, RSS, and XML. Knowledge of web server software (such as Apache) and related best practices and services. Familiarity with blogs (especially WordPress), content management systems, wikis, and other social media tools. Graphical User Interface (GUI) design skills required. Effective image/photo creating and editing skills with knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Fireworks, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Multimedia experience, such as Flash programming and understanding of technical considerations regarding various multimedia formats. Familiarity with both Mac and PC operating systems in a networked environment. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.
