Welding Engineer
Background
As the Welding Engineer, your versatile role includes maintaining the CSA W47.1 Division 1 company certification, support planned and emergency welding repairs, support major capital projects involving high temperature applications and welding requirements of new components including QAQC, and drive process and/or service life improvements across manufacturing including through application of corrosion resistant overlays, hardfacing, plating and coating, primarily on rolls. You will also fulfill the requirements of Dofasco’s TSSA owner user quality program as the TSSA Inspector Supervisor. You will be an active participant in achieving ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s strategic objectives in the areas of Health and Safety, Environment, Energy, Production, Quality & Yield, and Cost. During your first year of employment, you will receive mentoring and direction from the current Welding Expert and TSSA Inspector Supervisor who has greater than 30 years experience and all the certifications listed under knowledge and skills.
Overall Responsibility
- Fulfill requirements and obligations of the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) in connection with the CSA W47.1 Division 1 certification on behalf of ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Obtain CWB approval to act as a registered welding engineer for the company.
- Lead technical expert on investigations and upgrade projects where high temperature materials or welding specifications are to be changed and/or improved.
- Provide technical welding knowledge and skills to support all manufacturing areas of ArcelorMittal Dofasco including reviewing existing and creating new welding procedures for use by in house welding team for planned and emergency welding repairs
- Mentoring of engineering, R&D, welding and NDT employees to maintain and increase widespread process and regulatory knowledge within Dofasco
- Provide technical support to the in-house machine shops that perform component refurbishments including boring, cladding, and heat treatment.
- Support Continuous Improvement activities with Purchasing and other areas that support the achievement of World Class results at AMD.
- TSSA Owner User Inspector Supervisor responsible for quality manual compliance of all ArcelorMittal Dofasco equipment governed by the TSSA Act, including equipment located in Utilities, Hot Mill, Iron, Coke, Steelmaking and Finishing areas. Obtain the authorization to act as a TSSA Inspector alternate to certify emergency repairs for TSSA piping and vessels to resume production after emergency repairs have been conducted.
Accountabilities:
- Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of welding fundamentals, applicable welding codes and regulations, and practical application and demonstrate the ability to apply that expert knowledge in both routine and emergency situations.
- Advise on the purchase of piping materials, fittings and fabricated assemblies, and review manufacturers data / material test reports for purchased items.
- Advise on appropriate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods
- Apply specialized knowledge to evaluate material product and vendor services for the Purchasing department.
- Sustain cost avoidance from extended production downtime by preparing and executing quick emergency repairs (on call work required)
- Continually scan the environment for better technologies and applications to support long term strategy including collaboration and consultation with ArcelorMittal Global R&D and sister plants.
- Responsible for compliance to Technical Standards and Safety Act, Ontario Regulation 220/01.
- Develop and maintain intimate knowledge of boiler and pressure vessel regulations required by the TSSA.
- Aid in the development and update of the Quality Manual to ensure compliance with the TSSA regulations.
- Aid in the development and training plans to ensure proper staffing and the development of welders and NDT technicians to meet all aspects of the TSSA Quality Manual. Ensure all Welders and NDT personnel are competent and appropriately certified.
- Act as the TSSA Inspector Alternate when the Inspector is unavailable
- Liason with the TSSA to represent Dofasco with reference to the TSSA Act by:
- Participate in annual audit of Dofasco Inc. Facilities with TSSA
- Adhere to TSSA reporting requirements for accidents and emergency repairs.
- Inspection of repairs to boilers, pressure vessels and piping to ensure conformance to the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Regulation
- Liaison with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and Factory Mutual (for both in-house personnel and outside contractors)
Education & Experience:
- Engineering degree in Welding Technology or Metallurgy or Mechanical, or equivalent, with 10+ years of relevant experience is required.
- PEO license holder
- Eligible to obtain CWB approval to act as a registered welding engineer for the company.
- International Welding Engineer Designation is an asset
- CSA W178.2 Welding inspector certification (Level 2 minimum required)
- Must successfully complete the following courses:
- NBIC Owner User Repair Course and receive a passing score on the examination for the Repair Inspector Exam (R)
- NBIC Owner User In-Service Report
- Experience in the design, construction, repair, operation or inspection of boilers, pressure vessels or piping is preferred
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Welding codes and extensive working experience with CSA W59/CSA W47.1 and ASME Sc. IX, in particular
- Extensive knowledge of welding processes and procedures, weld design and non-destructive evaluation
- Advanced knowledge of high temperature material selection and coatings
- General knowledge of equipment and failure modes
- Working knowledge of Root Cause Failure Analysis methods
- Working knowledge of the FMEA Methodology
- Knowledge in Code requirements for boilers and pressure vessels, pressure piping and pressure relief devices governed by the TSSA and BPVA is preferred.

Work Environment:
- Plant/Plant Office/Shop environment
- Required to wear personal safety equipment while in the plant.
- The manufacturing plant environment includes exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes, noise, and large industrial equipment.
Hours of Work:
- Days Monday through Friday.
- Overtime is required dependent on workload during peak periods.
- Position may be eligible for part time or adhoc remote work.
- Emergency call-ins and cell phone required. Dofasco is a 24/7/365 manufacturing environment and essential service.
