Job description: Overview:
The Yard Supervisor’s prime objective is to coordinate the activities of the Yard (in-house, temps and contractors) in order to maintain a clean plant within safety, environment, quality, production requirements, and cost standards.
They are accountable to manage and respect the yard weekly planning and control his budget.
In addition, they will ensure Yard employees are held accountable for established work standards and performance levels in order to achieve the Plant’s objectives and targets.
Structure:
Reports directly to the Production Manager. This position works with all departments such as Production, Maintenance, and Quarry.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively supervise 20-30 yard employees every day. Can go up to 50 employees during maintenance shut downs
- Supervise an EIT
- Organizes and supervises contractors as required
- Schedule, plan, direct and assign work to the yard group.
- Organizes manpower due to absenteeism and overtime requirements
- Organizes labor in order to maximize utilization and reduce overtime and scheduling costs
- Manage vacations, timecards and overtime equalization
- Coordinate and conduct yearly refresher training (safety training, mobile equipment, rail rules, etc.)
- Liaise with other areas within the Plant toward successful scheduling and execution of assigned work.
- Employ continuous improvement practices aimed at making the Plant a safer, cleaner, more efficient work place.
- Support plant Key Performance Indicators
- Work closely with the temp agencies and hire temporary employees to fulfill labor shortages and complete specific housekeeping projects
- Administration of the Collective Agreement and handling of day-to-day Industrial Relations issues relating to the Union.
- Train and onboard students, temporary employees, and new employees.
Safety leadership:
- Being a safety leader, proactively act in eliminating/controlling risk and lead and inspire the crew by example.
- Ensure communication of safety requirements as it relates to other plant departments.
- Participates in development and implementation of safety rules and procedures
- Carry out monthly safety meetings and seek to resolve all safety actions raised by the crew
- Carry out daily safety workplace inspections, hazard and field level risk assessments.
Operational:
- Ensure proper use of all mobile equipment to avoid damage and reporting of all incidents and defects.
- Propose and respect a weekly yard planning which includes all repetitive jobs and down days as per the maintenance master schedule
- Manage his department to ensure the respect of the dedicated yard budget and the plant variable and fixed costs objectives
- Work with the Production Manager on the weekly costs forecast
- Improve and maintain housekeeping within Plant premises in order to achieve a clean, safe and environmentally compliant plant.
- Build business cases and propose some improvements based on where the plant spends the most money and time
Personnel:
- Develop a positive team environment
- Remove any roadblocks to ensure yard employees are working efficiently and effectively
- Defines objectives for the yard employees and carries out the necessary performance reviews
- Promote quality of work and motivates personnel
Qualification Profile:
Education and Experience:
- Post secondary education with minimum 5 years experience in a heavy industrial environment as a supervisor or manager.
Technical Skills:
- Capacity of managing a multi-disciplinary team with workers having small heavy industry experience such as temporary labor and people with very different backgrounds
- Good knowledge of all applicable local safety and environment laws and regulations
- Proven track record of supervising unionized employees
- Good knowledge of logistics and/or production management and planning
- Good computer skills
- Proven ability to learn through formal training and work related experiences

Salary Range: $80,000 – $90,000 depending on experience
